Synthetic vs human hair extensions

Learn the differences and make an informed decision as to what is best for you

Hair extensions are very popular with many people. This is because in a short while they can be totally transformed, with a whole new look. Those who have short hair and feel that they need a change normally go for hair extensions, as this will guarantee a totally different look. However, it is not simply a matter of having hair extensions done - there is a choice between synthetic extensions and human hair extensions.

Of course human hair extensions are more expensive as they are more natural and last longer. There is a lot to know about human hair extensions though, before visiting the salon. For instance, if a poor quality hair is used, then your extensions won’t be at all what you expected. They can become brittle and dry, causing them to tangle easily. The purpose of this article is to show you the differences between the two - synthetic vs. human hair extensions, and let you decide.

There are different qualities of human hair extensions available and, to put it bluntly, you get what you pay for. In other words, the less you pay for your extensions, the lower the quality will be. The cuticle on the highest quality human hair is still perfectly aligned in the same direction. In lower quality human hair the cuticles are not facing in the same direction, which means that the hair can become matted and interlock, similar to Velcro.

Very often, cheaper human hair is placed in acid baths to completely destroy the cuticle, which makes the hair lose its shine. Hair is then covered with a silicon layer to restore the shine, which looks beautiful, but does wear off after a few washes, causing the hair to become dry, as well as matted and tangled.

Human hair extensions are very easy to look after in that you can treat it as you do your own hair. After you have washed your hair, your extensions will dry the same as your own hair does, which makes it easier for styling. Unlike synthetic hair extensions, you can use curling tongs and straightening irons freely on human hair extensions.

Synthetic hair is manmade fiber that is produced to look like your own hair. It has a different shine to human hair and moves differently to human hair as well. Synthetic hair does not blend in well with human hair. However, new synthetic fibers are produced that are more heat resistant, look more like human hair, and come in a wide variety of colors. Synthetic hair extensions are the least expensive.

One great advantage of synthetic hair is though, is that it holds a style very well. If you want your extensions curly and do them with heated rollers, the curls will last for days. Also, if you want to wear it straight, it will stay that way - even in the rain.

Synthetic vs. human hair extensions - they both have their advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on your wants, needs, circumstances, and of course, the size of your budget.
